2nd Grade (A)

  • 2nd Grade
Welcome to 2nd Grade! My name is Torey Gostas and this is my 2nd year of teaching. I am so blessed to be teaching here at St. John the Baptist. My favorite part of being a teacher here is being able to share my faith with my students. I am originally from Greenville, WI, but have lived in Green Bay since I moved here for college at UW-Green Bay. I received my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. In my free time, I enjoy rollerblading, reading, spending time with family and friends (especially my two nieces and nephews), traveling, and anything to do with the Green Bay Packers! I look forward to a wonderful school year ahead!

Welcome to our class website!  This website will be a place where I post updated information regarding what we are learning in our 2nd grade classroom.

A few key things to note this week:

  • We will have a Chapter 7 Religion Test on Thursday.
  • We will have a Unit 11 FUNdations Test on Tuesday.
  • We will have a Unit 6 Math Test on Friday.
  • The boilers in the school have been officially turned off for the year.  This means that, at times, it has been a little chilly in the classroom.  I have suggested to students that they keep a sweater or a SJB jacket in their backpacks in case they get cold.
  • Thank you so much to those families that were able to send in a box of tissues.  We could still probably use a couple more if you have an extra box around the house.  Thanks!

Reader’s Workshop:

  • We have begun a Unit on Fairy Tales. This is a fun Unit to end the year on, and I am excited to explore Fairy Tales with the students!
  • Students will learn the elements that make a fairy tale.
  • We will be reading the following Fairy Tales and doing activities with each story:
    • Goldilocks and the Three Bears
    • The Three Billy Goat’s Gruff
    • Little Red Riding Hood
    • Rapunzel

Fundations (Phonics):

  • We are finishing up Unit 11 in FUNdations. The Unit 11 test will be on Tuesday! Please review with the at-home packet that was sent home 2 weeks ago.
  • In this unit, students will:
    • Continue to work with the vowel diagraph syllable type focusing on the long e sound.
      • ee, ea, and ey (jeep, eat, and key)
    • Understand that the ea combination also makes a different sound in the word bread compared to eat.
    • Use the spelling option procedure to spell these words with the long e sound.

Writer’s Workshop:

  • We have moved on to a writing unit focusing on opinion writing.
  • Students have learned that an opinion is how a person thinks, believes or feels about something.
  • Students have learned that in opinion writing they must state an opinion, give reasons to support the opinion, and have a conclusion.
  • This week, students will learn how to move their writing from their opinion writing organizer to lined paper.
  • Students will work on adding transition words to their opinion writing to help it flow.

Religion:

  • We are wrapping up Chapter 7 in Religion this week.
  • For the test, students should know:
    • The Ten Commandments are God’s laws about loving God and others.
    • The Great Commandment sums up all of God’s laws.
    • Jesus gave us the New Commandment.
    • Jesus told parables to teach us about God and share his love for us.
    • When we act like the Good Samaritan, we are being a good neighbor.
    • Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day = Attend Mass and rest on Sunday.
    • You shall not kill = Care for yourself and others.
    • You shall not steal = Respect other people and their property.
    • Honor your father and your mother= Obey your parents and guardians.
    • You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods = Don’t be jealous of what other people have.
